Theater DUO ＜第3.5幕＞

約１年ぶり（！）の更新となるTheater DUOは、『DUO 3.0』に散りばめられた560本の例文をつなぎ合わせ、「隠された」ストーリーを紡ぎ出していくシリーズです。今や年始限定の企画になりつつある気がしますが、未使用の文はまだまだたくさん残っています。

ここで登場人物をあらためて紹介します。

Bob：主人公。Jenniferと恋愛結婚後、まもなく破局。現在就活中。
Nick：やり手の実業家。仲間とIT企業「Duos」を興す。
Jennifer：Bobと離婚後、Nickと婚約。悪女との噂も。
Jane：Bobの親友でよき相談相手。「Duos」の正社員。
Lisa：Bobの友人でNickの元妻。現在行方不明。

さて、今回は第３幕と第４幕の間のお話でJaneに焦点が当たります。第３．５幕だけに三行半（みくだりはん）の文字がちらつきます（笑）が果たして・・・。なお、従来通り、DUO中の文章No.（ページNo.ではありません）を各文末の（　）内に示しました。

BobはJenniferと離婚後、それまで勤めていた会社も辞め、再就職先を探す毎日。一方のJenniferはBobと別れた後、契約社員としてNick達が経営する「Duos」に派遣が決まりました。そこにはBobの親友Janeも勤めていますが、Janeは会社にかなり不満があり爆発寸前です。
さて、Jenniferが「Duos」に来て１ヶ月ほど経ったある日の昼休み。Janeは同僚のKenに話しかけました・・・

Jane: Sorry to interrupt your meal but I'd like a word with you in private.
Ken: Can I get back to you later? (309)

ジェーン：食事の邪魔をして悪いんだけど、ちょっと内密に話がしたいの。
ケン：後で君のところに行くよ。

Janeは会社での日頃の不満をKenに吐き出し始めました。どうやら上司としてのNickの態度がJenniferとJaneとでだいぶ違うようです。Janeの場合はいつも・・・

Jane: Nick, I want you to look this over before I turn it in.
Nick: Sorry, but I have my hands full right now. (161)

ジェーン：ニック、これを提出する前にざっと目を通していただきたいんですが。
ニック：ごめん。今、手が離せないんだ。

ところが、Jenniferの場合は・・・

Jennifer: Nick, I'm counting on you.
Nick: OK, I'll see to it.
Jennifer: Thanks, I appreciate it.
Nick: Don't mention it. (285)

ジェニファー：頼りにしてるわ、ニック。
ニック：大丈夫、きちんとやっておきますよ。
ジェニファー：ありがとう、感謝するわ。
ニック：いいんですよ。

JaneとKenの会話が続きます。

Ken: Apparently, Nick wasn't willing to take on the task because it would just add to his burdens. (282)
Jane: Nick looks down on anyone who comes from a rural area. (503) I hate him! He behaves as if he were somebody. (151) I'm fed up with just shuffling papers and pouring coffee. I've made up my mind to quit! (377) 

ケン：どうやら、ニックは自分の負担が増えるからその仕事を引き受けたがらなかったようだね。
ジェーン：ニックは地方出身なら誰だろうと見下すのよ。彼、大っ嫌い！まるで自分が大物であるかのように振る舞うし。書類整理とかお茶くみなんかももううんざり。会社を辞めることに決めたわ！

ケンは心の中で思いました。

Female clerks may well complain about their routines, which are not challenging at all.... (379)

女性職員が自分達の日常業務に不満を言うのももっともだ、全くやりがいのない仕事だから・・・

Janeは会社に三行半を叩きつけ、ついに退社。Jenniferは・・・

ちょっと気になったのは後半のKenのコメント、Apparently～のくだりです。

●apparently　どうやら・見たところ～
　形容詞 apparentは①はっきりとした、②外見上の、見たところの、という意味ですが、apparentlyになるとほとんど②の意味の副詞として使われ、①の意味ではまれだそうです（アルク・英辞郎）。「明らかに」を意味する副詞といえば obviouslyがありますが、元の形容詞obviousには「当たり前」・「分かりきった」といったニュアンスが含まれています。

●be willing to do　（内心）あまりやりたくない
　Kenの台詞では否定文でしたが、最近の傾向としては、肯定文で、あんまりやりたくないといった反語的なニュアンスを含むそうです（入門ビジネス英語）。

Theater DUO ＜第2.5幕＞

１年ぶり（！）の更新となるTheater DUOです。『DUO 3.0』 の560本の例文の中に散りばめられている「隠された」ストーリーを発掘していくシリーズ、今回は時間的に第２幕と第３幕の間のお話で、新キャラのLisaとNickが登場します。なお、従来通り、DUO中の文章No.（ページNo.ではありません）を各文末の（　）内に示しました。

何やらLisaとNickの夫婦がもめているようです。

Nick: Let's make up, Lisa.
Lisa: Stop taking me for granted! We're through for good this time. I mean it! (205)
Nick: Come on! Don't get so emotional, Lisa. I didn't mean to hurt you. Let's talk it over. (206)

ニック：仲直りしようよ、リサ。
リサ：私がいて当然だなんて思わないで。私達、今度は永遠に終わりよ。本気なんだから！
ニック：おいおい！リサ、そう感情的になるなって。君を傷つけるつもりじゃなかったんだ。じっくり話し合おうって。

数日後、Lisa が友達のBobと話しています。

Bob: Lisa, are you getting along with Nick?
Lisa: Once in a while, I think of divorcing him.
Bob: You must be kidding! (529)

ボブ：リサ、ニックとうまくやってる？。
リサ：時々、離婚を考えることがあるわ。
ボブ：冗談だろ！

リサの発言を聞いて驚くBobでしたが、実はBobには心当たりがありました。リサのためにBobは思い切って本音を語り出します。

Bob: There's no point in talking back to Nick. He is a "dictator," so to speak. (373)  You despise Nick, don't you?
Lisa: On the contrary! I look up to him. (375)
Bob: Between you and me, Lisa, I came across Nick passionately embracing a woman. (524)

At present, it's still uncertain whether it was done deliberately or by accident.... (470)

ボブ：ニックに口答えしたって無駄だよ。言ってみりゃ、彼は「独裁者」さ。ニックを軽蔑してるんだろ？
リサ：とんでもない！彼を尊敬してるわ。
ボブ：ここだけの話だけど、リサ、オレ、女の人を熱く抱擁しているニックを見ちゃったんだ。

そうなったのが故意か偶然かは現時点ではまだ不明である・・・。

Lisaはすでに全て知っているようでした。冒頭の夫婦ゲンカはまさにこのことが原因でした。BobはLisaの一途で気丈な姿を目の当たりにして心を動かされていました。よもやNickの抱きしめた相手が自分の妻のJenniferだったとはつゆ知らず・・・。

数ヵ月後、ようやくBobにも明るい話題が･･･

Jane: How's it going, Bob?
Bob: Couldn't be better! I did well in my job interview!
Jane: Good for you! (366)

Bob: Let's see… it's a quarter to eight. (559)
Jane: Let's call it a day, Bob. I'm starved.
Bob: Yep. I'll buy you dinner. (560)
　It's on me.
Jane: No. You treat me every time we eat out.
Bob: Well, okay. Let's split the check then. (68)

Bob は新しい未来に向かって歩き出したようです。めでたしめでたし。

さて、５回にわたってお送りしたTheater DUO ですが、文章をあちこち探していたら、DUO が実に無駄なくスマートに作られているのが改めてわかりました。他にも隠されたストーリーがあるかもしれません（笑）。今後も、* のついた単語の習得を含め、DUO を座右に置いて英語学習を続けていきたいと思います。

いよいよBob とJennifer の雲行きが怪しくなってきました。Bob とJane の会話が続きます。

Bob: Jennifer went so far as to call me an idiot and she wouldn't take it back.
Jane: Serves you right! You provoked her, didn't you? (544)
Why do you put up with her arrogance? She's just taking advantage of you.
Bob: Shut up! (545)

その後、JenniferはBobからお金を巻き上げて去っていきました。

As far as Bob is concerned, anything goes. By contrast, Jane is very cautious. (520)

Bob: Jennifer deceived me!
Jane: You should have known better than to trust her. (531)
Bob: It dawned on me that I had been taken in by Jennifer all along.
Jane: How naive! Didn't you see through her? (539)
Bob: These days, the motives for marriage are not necessarily pure. Take Jennifer for example. (557)
　Speaking of Jennifer, she got engaged to a businessman.
Jane: I'm at a loss for words! I hope she won't break it off. (556)
　You cannot escape from today's harsh realities, so you must adapt to them. (358)

“Living here all by myself is torture!” he sobbed. (536)

Jane: Cheer up! You couldn't help it.
Bob: I did my best.
Jane: I know. Don't dwell on the past. You can start over. (211)
　Whenever you're in trouble or feeling down, I'll be there for you. (542)

Bob にもどこかJenniferを責めきれない弱みがあったようですが、早く元気になってほしいところです。

●dwell 自体は「住む」という意味ですが、on を伴った場合、それに「くよくよこだわる」「長々と述べる」といったちょっとネガティブな意味になりますね。いくつかの辞書を引いてみたのですが、たいていon の後の語句にはpastが含まれていました。

Bob: Can you spare a minute? I'd like to discuss something of importance to both of us. (518)
Jennifer: I must admit we quarrel every now and then, but generally we're on good terms with each other. (200)

He could hardly comprehend what she was implying. (499)

Jennifer: You owe me $200 altogether, Bob. When are you going to pay me back?
Bob: I'm sorry. I'm hard up.
Jennifer: There you go again! (355)
　That's odd! Tell me how it happened.
Bob: I'll explain it to you later. (72)
Jennifer: I can't stand it anymore!
Bob: Calm down. I'll come over as soon as possible. (526)

His ambiguous reply made her all the more irritated. (500) When her patience gave out, she grabbed his collar and swore at him. (199)
“Stop making a fuss. It really gets on my nerves!” she shouted. (372) Bob has to get through this ordeal on his own. (547)

どうやらお金の問題でもめているようですが真相ははっきりしません。Bob と Jennifer、大丈夫なんでしょうか？！

今回出てきた単語では、ordeal （厳しい試練、つらい体験）が難しく感じました。手元の「E-Gate英和辞典／Benesse」によるとordeal は具体的な内容を指して使うようです。そして、第二義には「試罪法･･･昔、火・毒などの試練を課して傷つかないものを無罪とした裁判方法」と書かれていました。国や時代についてはコメントがなかったのですが、この文章を読んだ時、魔女裁判を連想しました。似たような話で、acid test （試金石）・・・金が本物かどうかを判別するのに硝酸（nitric acid）につけて腐食しなければ本物と判定したことから（イディオム由来辞典／三省堂）」というのを思い出しました。日本語の「試金石」は、こすりつけてできる条痕から金の純度を判定した黒色の硬い石（那智黒石）の意味で、日英で由来は違うようです。他にも、かつて硬貨を弾いた音で本物かどうかを見分けたことからできた ring true （真実のように思える）という表現もあります。

Bob: Hi, Jane. What's up?
Jane: Not much. How about you?
Bob: I got married to Jennifer.
Jane: Wow! Congratulations! (541)
Bob: What are you chuckling about?
Jane: Bob, you have your sweatshirt on backwards!
Bob: Oops! (506)

BobとJenniferがついに結婚！ これでハッピーエンド（happy ending）？ それとも・・・

洋服が「後ろ前逆で」はon backwards 、つまり後ろ向きに着るわけですね。他に、upside down（上下逆さまで）、inside out （裏返しで）がありますが、これらにはどちらも「大混乱で」という意味にも展開します。例えば、turn ～ upside down （～をめちゃくちゃにする）などは日本語の「上を下への大騒ぎ」という言い方に似てますね。混乱状態を表すセットフレーズには、topsy-turvy、helter-skelter、hotchpotch（hodgepodge）のように韻を踏んだものが多い気がします。hustle and bustle （喧騒）も何回かビジ英に出ていました。
　さらに、inside out には「徹底的に」という意味もありますね。この場合にはand を間にはさんで、inside and out（中も外も→隅々まで）（ビジ英・2006年11月号p.10）がより正確な言い方なのでしょう。ちなみに、「隅々まで」を意味する決まりフレーズにはnook and crannyがありました。

さあ、果たしてBobはJenniferを取り戻すことができるのか？
がんばれ、Bob！

第１文（No.530）は、２種類のtear（片方は過去形のtoreですが）がさりげなく使われています。名詞の「涙」は「ティア」、動詞の「引きちぎる」は「テア」。このあたりもDUOのよいところです。
Janeの台詞（No.75）のstand on one's own two feet （自立する）は、ちょうどビジ英（12月号、p.70最下行）に出てきていました。
